South Bend South Bend Animal Care and Control partnered with the Humane Society to bring nearly 400 free vaccinations for dogs and cats in the city on Saturday.

The line snaked around St. Adalbert's School today as dog and cat owners patiently waited to get their furry four-legged friends free vaccinations.

Free rabies, parvo distemper and feline 5 shots were given out on a first-come, first serve basis.
.
Vaccinations began at 10 am, but people started lining up early as early at 7:30 am Severo Jimenez says he waited 2.5 hours before he saw the front of the line, but thinks it was definitely worth it.

“They need their shots and I don’t have the money so God bless they were able to help us out with the shots. It’s very exciting,” says Jimenez.

Matt Harmon works for South Bend Animal Care and Control and he says the vaccines given out today will help prevent the spreading of some serious diseases.

“Parvo distemper is a disease that is very, very communicable and can cause some very serious issues in puppies- it cause major diarrhea and vomiting so we're helping to curb that in the community and we're also addressing that state requirement for rabies vaccinations in cats and dogs so we're helping with that pretty significantly,” says Harmon.

Along with vaccinations, owners were also offered low-cost spay and neuter sign-up.
